The Dancer

March 27, 2009

I've been MIA the last two days* for a reason... my final was due for my documentary film history class! For my final, I chose to make a short documentary featuring my 97 year old aunt, and her dancing past! She's quite a spunky lady, and I love hearing her talk about sneaking out to dances when she was 14 (1925!) I thought you might enjoy it too...

*well, almost two days... actually more like 36 hours...

Is that "Documenting Our World?" Who is teaching it this semester? That was one of my favorite classes at New School.

Thanks, Millie!

The class was The History of Non-Fiction Film with Rebecca Alvin... we had the option of writing a paper or doing a short film for our final. Did you take that class?

That's so great! She's wonderful! Don't you want to just listen to her tell stories all day long? Thank you for sharing!

I actually had almost 2 hours of footage I had to cut down to 8 minutes! I wanted to only include her dancing anecdotes, but she had so many other stories too- once, when she was working at a laundry, she found a gun in a pair of pants and almost shot her boss!

I had it with David Nugent - I don't believe there was the option of making a film. I probably would have chosen to write a paper since I love writing about movies - I think I wrote on Herzog's "My Best Fiend."

What a wonderful woman! Can I have her? ;)
I love that she has chosen to remember the glad things, not the World Wars or the Depression!

Oh, forgot to say that she was a real beauty when she was younger! And the man in the last wedding picture was not that bad neither... Great taste in men! (Tell her that a Swedish girl, knowing what she talks about, said it to her! Haha!)

Fantastic job, Kate Gabrielle!

Oh, Kate this is priceless! I love your aunt. If you have the time, I'd be thrilled to watch the rest of her interview. That wedding photo that is near the end looks very similar to the one of my grandparents (the Hungarian ones). My grandparents were big dancers too, and especially loved the csardas. *sigh* I'd love to learn to do the csardas. :)

That is great work, Kate. and so interesting and sweet. Definitely I think it something we need to see more of, preserving the memories of the older generations for generations to come!

I'm so glad everyone liked the video so much! I'll have to tell Aunt Annie about all of her nice compliments when I see her at Easter :)
