Cary Grant vs. Cary Grant : Where do you stand?

May 22, 2010

There's a huge battle raging all over the internet (okay, it's just between me and Millie) over who was more dashing, debonair, charming and all-around handsome: 30's/40's Cary Grant or 50's/60's Cary Grant? I think you can tell by my above graphic where my own loyalties lie.

Where do you stand?

CHEATER! CHEATER! CHEATER! YOU SMOOSHED UP THE 30'S PHOTO OF HIM! AND *I* SAID 40'S CARY!

YOU'RE SUCH A LIAR!

;-D

It's a well known fact that 30's Cary and 40's Cary are one category and 50's Cary and 60's Cary are another. Sorry, Millie, but facts are facts. ;-D

"Well-known", eh?! Perhaps it is well-known in the, um, "social circles" YOU frequent....

Look it up on wikipedia, or in the dictionary. (Ok, I was SO tempted to edit Cary Grant's wiki listing before posting this comment, since you can actually do that, but I <3 him too much.) But really, it's a well known fact in ALL social circles. ;-D

You just proved far more then I EVER could about your cheating tendencies! Gonna edit Wikipedia, huh?! WHAT A DESPICABLE IDEA! ;-DDDDD

ah, but then I didn't! See, even when I get thoughts about cheating my conscience talks me out of it! So there!!!

Millie said...

Well, OBVIOUSLY, your conscience wasn't working when you posted lies about me and older Cary! ;-D

30's/40's Cary Grant of course.

The Philadelphia Story, Sylvia Scarlett, The Awful Truth, Bringing up Baby, Holiday, Only Angels Have Wings, His Girl Friday, Penny Serenade, Suspicion, Notorious, I Was a Male War Bride

VS.

People Will Talk, Monkey Business, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, Charade

30's/40's Cary Grant won by KO. And if I was a girl, I would choose the young Cary, ideal son-in law ever. But if you divided Cary into smaller parts, it would be another story.

(anyway, I was engage in the same battle to determine on who's the best incarnation between the Elvis' Memphis Flash or the 68' Elvis comeback until his death)

I am totally for 30s/50s Cary Grant. Maybe if he hadn't gotten such an orange tan when he was older...but he did.

Oh! This is a hard one. I think that they both have their charms. 30s/40s Grant was my first though and there for still the first in my heart, though I think I could find reason to argue either way.

Hahaha. Can I be one of the much hated fence sitters? I find allure in both 30s/40s Cary and 50s/60s Cary. Maybe I'm just greedy ;]

You two seriously crack me up. :-D

HA! I knew 40's Cary would win! You only had the support of the Tumblr people. And we ALL know they are mostly insane creepers! ;-DD

I like both Cary Grants equally.

I love the variety of his 30s/40s roles, but I love how entrenched/in-his-element he is as the iconic, legendary '50s Cary Grant. I can't choose.

I would take Cary at any age but not with the orange tan :) I would have to say late 1930's or late 40's.

40s. That is all.

Sorry, Kate. But I'm going to go with 30's/40's Cary on this one. He aged into an exceedingly handsome man, but I really am quite smitten with the younger one.

There is no contest. I'm a fan of all grant all the time. And while you do have to take into consideration his incredible acting in his later movies such as "North By Northwest," you CAN'T argue that he fills the "dreamboat" category in movies like "His Girl Friday," and "Philadelphia Story," or "Notorious" just to name a few.

The witty banter, the boyish charms...who can resist?

In other words: I'M ON TEAM MILLIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hands down, Screwball Cary!

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

(Is it creepy that I keep coming back here to read new comments?! ;-D)

um. Millie? This actually isn't a good thing for you. If old Cary is lesser loved, that means you need to switch teams now!!!!! ;-D

I think Cary Grant was most beautiful when he was younger. Which isn't to say he wasn't lovely as he got older. I absolutely loved him in His Girl Friday. Great blog!

OH NO! SO TRUE!

While 30s/40s Cary Grant was very attractive, and yes his boyish charm came out in all the screwball comedies; I must vote for 50s/60s Cary Grant. He was more mature, more defined, and overall delicious. Like a fine wine indeed.

50s/60s Cary wins by virtue of North by Northwest alone. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I think Cary Grant's 50's and 60's film roles were fun (Charade, in particular), but he didn't really get a lot of room to act in them. In his 30's and 40's output, the roles are just so much better-- Suspicion, Notorious, Gunga Din, Bringing Up Baby, Philadelphia Story, None But the Lonely Heart, My Girl Friday...That dark edge he has in Notorious, especially, was so interesting to watch, and he just didn't seem to get a chance to do that the further he was in his film career.

You get to a point as that big of a star in which you're essentially "Cary Grant playing Cary Grant", I guess, which is just as warm and comfortable and good looking as a beautiful old sweater, but just not as much fun as 30's and 40's CG.

Additionally, I love this blog. Where else could I hash this out in public? :)

this is hilarious! and so so true!

I prefer 30s/40s Cary. He always had this dark, cynical edge to his screen persona, but I've always found it a lot more menacing, perhaps world-weary, ergo a bit off-putting, in the 50s/60s.

I'll be honest that I have no clue how to decide. I love Cary Grant in all decades. This is such a tough one.

Well, my wife, Katie-Bar-The-Door, has always insisted that Cary Grant got better looking as he got older (much like me, I'm sure she meant to add), so I have to defer to her as far as that goes ...
