A Classic Movie Halloween!

September 30, 2009

Halloween is just around the corner, and I don't know about you, but I'm looking past all the ghoulish costumes and seeing this as an opportunity to dress up like a favorite movie star! Sorry, as much as I love them, Audrey and Marilyn are not on this list. I don't think my help is required to figure out how to steal their looks :)

I'll actually be wearing clothes I already own, but I put together nine ensembles that I wish I was wearing, instead! After hours (and hours.. and hours..) of work, here they are! Nine classic movie star-inspired Halloween outfits assembled by yours truly! Happy early Halloween!

Edited 3/16 to add: I had to come back and edit this post because the images were all missing and the code was wonky. All of the items I had originally linked to are no longer available, so I removed the links.

Wow, these are fabulous. I can't even begin to imagine how much time it took to search out all of these gorgeous items, but I thank you! I thoroughly enjoyed viewing these ensembles. I must say, you were pretty "spot on"...well done!

And, I hope you take your own advice and dress up as one of these divas...Ginger Rogers, perhaps?

This is an amazing post, and I want every single item of clothing you have featured. I am drooling (it's partly because I'm making pasta, but mostly because of the clothes).

Oh my gosh! This is crazy amazing!

I especially love Ingrid, Gene, Ginger, and Doris'! But, they are all amazing...and PERFECT! I'm amazed how well you capture the style!

Wow!! Hats off to you and all the work this must have taken. My favourite is Gene Tierney... off to go look up that dress!

These are so cute. I especially love the ones for Ginger, Ingrid, and Gene. I would love to wear all of them though, if only I could afford it.

Clever ensembles. That must have been a lot of fun to work on. It also illustrates how we identify a period of clothing with a particular actress. Great post.

I would like to purchase all of these outfits please!

Ohhh wow that is so creatively neat! :) Very cool. :)

Beautiful! I would wear any of these outfits on an every day basis (well, maybe except Rita's).
I would like to dress up as a star this year, but I always go to midnight Rocky Horror and dress up as Janet.

Wow! I'll take the Ruby Keeler and the Doris Day outfit, thank you! (I already have a Clara Bow dress like that, haha)

Wow how fun! I think I'd choose either Gene, Rita, or Clara.

Nicely Done. Isn't masking and silhouetting and retouching and resizing fun. :-)

So many kinds of wonderful! What fun! I wish I were a "Clara", but I know I'm really an "Ingrid".

Just brilliant! When I was scrolling down I kinda knew who inspired each style without reading the name (and when I didn't it was just because the girl in question wasn't an actress of my acquaintance)...Great job! Lol, the Doris Day one is so Doris Day...my faves are the Ginger and Gene's ones :)

Awesome, awesome post! I love the Gene Tierney look! You got them all spot on!

AAH this is so flipping fun! I couldn't possibly pick a favorite, but being Rita for Halloween is a TOTAL possibility! That and Clara...I have a dress almost exactly like that from H&M that's navy with the fringies all over it. GAH I cannot wait for Halloween now!

If I were a girl, I think I would dress up as Doris Day for Halloween--the only drawback being I am not a blonde (but then I guess if I was a girl, I might be....)!

I looove the Glenda one! I already get a large amount of daily inspiration from her. I want the shoes in the Clara outfit, too!

Very nice -- perhaps in a week or two you can do a part 2 for those ladies who'd like to dress like Lombard or Loy.

Fabulous job here! I can tell this must've taken gobs of time, but what a great result. Definitely bookmarking this one for future reference. :)

These are all great costumes, although I particularly want the Ginger Rogers outfit -- and not for Halloween. ;)

These are all so great, thank you so much! They are all exactly like each person would have dressed. It must have taken so much time.

These are amazingly cute! You have such a great eye for what matches and what makes a great outfit, without losing sense of the actresses' styles. :)
And I just love how you gave Ingrid flat shoes, since she didn't really like heels and thought she was tall enough (I completely know how she felt, haha) :D

Oooh Goodness. What a SWELL post :D We don't celebrate Halloween here in The Netherlands, but all these classic actress-inspired looks are suitable for the whole year round :D

Oh no, the links don't show up/ work anymore! Is there any way you could repost them so we can see them again? I remember seeing them a few years ago and LOVING all of the costume ideas. Thanks so much!
