Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffanys

February 01, 2009

Update: I re-did this drawing, so I had to delete the earlier post.

Audrey Hepburn is the one who got me started on classic films, and so her and her movies hold a very special place in my heart. I had just turned 13 when I first saw "How to Steal a Million"- it was in December and I was starting my winter break from school. I had my dad take me to Hollywood Video (a local sort of Blockbuster chain that has since been Netflixed out of existence) and I rented about six of her movies to watch over my break. I went to the library and took out her biography, and her life story inspired me to volunteer for UNICEF. Practically overnight I was a different person. I discovered Frank Sinatra music and ditched my Britney Spears CDs the following February and ever since then it has been nothing but old music and old movies for me.

So now that my "how I discovered classic flim" story has been posted to my blog, next time you see an Audrey Hepburn drawing on Silents and Talkies, you can be assured that I will talk more about her and the movie than my own vintage taste conversion :)

what a great story! The first classic film I remember watching and loving was Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell, watch it over and over again, in fact I think I grew up wanting to be her. I loved the way she kept transforming her look and the style of her apartment over and over.

That is so cool! I am a big fan of Audrey; literally, I will defend her in anything she does, movies whatever. I had seen a couple of old movies before Roman Holiday, but that was the first film that elicited a true, happy response from me. And I instantly was under her spell. And now, a year later, I continue to be a full flegded Audrey fan. She's simply wunderbar.

I know that was long, but I love your blog and your sketches are amazing. You're very talented.

Whoa, I commented on this yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have appeared.

What I said was that "How To Steal A Million" is my favorite Audrey (well tied with "Roman Holiday") and how I love this sketch...the legs and shoes look especially cool!

Vivienne- I just saw Mame for the first time last year, and I completely adored it! I think that somewhere in my subconcious is a Mame just dying to break out. Ever since I was little I've re-done my bedroom pratically on a yearly basis and I think my "look" has gotten an overhaul just as often!

Jacqueline- I have heard some Jo Stafford but not too much yet. Next year will be 10 years since I first discovered old movies and music, but only recently did I start branching out from "strictly Frank"- I've discovered some earlier Jazz Age music that I like and I'm also on a Nancy Wilson kick. I think she was like a female Sinatra, especially her early albums.

Graciebird- Thank you so much, and feel free to write long comments anytime- I love reading them! I love Roman Holiday, I think it's one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn films. In my world, though, she would have given up the crown and run away with Gregory Peck :)

Millie- I actually had responded to you, too- but I had to delete the blog entry and re-post it because I couldn't figure out how to switch the picture that went with the post. I wasn't happy with her legs so I re-drew it and re-scanned it, and then couldn't figure out how to switch the old pic with the new. Anyway, Isn't How to Steal a Million fantastic? I think I've seen it 50 times and I could watch it a million more - pun intended :)

Okay, good I'm not going crazy!

I am quite certain I too have seen "HTSAM" at least 50 times! I just love it! I seriously bought a pair of rubber boots like the ones she wears w/ the pink nightie...just because she wore them!

If I could have any of her outfits in that movie, though, it would be the one when she meets Peter O'Toole to convince him to steal the venus. I love the veil-eye-mask thing. I'd also love to have her red convertible. It looks like a little toy car!

OMG, that's my favorite outfit too. I am forever staring with fascination at it! I love the metallic eye shadow too.
